Niamh: Finding Calm in Jam

When Niamh first joined New Forest Day Opportunities, change felt overwhelming. She was shy, lacking confidence, and needed 1:1 support to take part in activities.

Three years later, things look very different. With steady encouragement, patience, and the chance to try new things, Niamh has grown steadily in confidence and into herself. She now takes part in a wide range of activities, engages openly with others, and no longer requires that 1:1 support.

One of the places she’s found her rhythm is in the jam and chutney workshop. For Niamh, it’s more than just cooking – it’s a space where she feels calm and content.

‘I like working in the jam and chutney workshop. I like stirring the jam. It makes me feel happy. It makes me feel calm.’

Cooking isn’t something she does at home, but in the workshop it feels different. She’s proud of the skills she’s learnt here, especially when it comes to making strawberry jam.

‘I only cook when I’m here, it’s not my thing at home! I like doing it here. I like doing the strawberry jam.’

Being part of the team and working with her hands has helped Niamh build confidence. She can see the progress for herself.

‘I feel like I’m growing in confidence.’

Alongside her time in the workshop, Niamh has taken part in drama, free dance and meditation at New Forest Day Opportunities. Each new activity has been another step towards greater independence and resilience.

Her journey is a reminder of the difference the right environment and support can make. From once finding change difficult, Niamh now takes on new challenges with positivity. She’s flourished in ways that go beyond the kitchen – showing how the simple act of stirring jam can be part of something much bigger.
